How do I politely decline a photography client?

Reply within a day with three sentences: thank them for something specific, say clearly that you are not taking the session, and point them towards a photographer or a resource that fits. No invented excuses and no long explanation, which only opens a negotiation.

Do I have to give a reason for saying no?

No. "I am not taking on this kind of work at the moment" is complete and honest. A reason invites a counter-argument, and a false reason eventually meets somebody who knows it is false.

Should I quote a high price to make the client go away?

Never. They may accept, and then you are obliged to shoot a session you did not want, to a standard set by the fee. If the answer is no, the answer is no.

How do I decline when the budget is too low?

Say the number your work starts at and stop there. Do not apologise for it and do not negotiate against yourself. Suggesting where they might find a photographer at their level is generous and costs you nothing.

What if I already accepted the booking?

Withdraw as early as possible, return the deposit, and personally find two replacements with the date confirmed. Early and helpful is a professional story. Late and empty-handed is the other kind.

Will saying no cost me referrals?

The opposite, usually. People refer photographers who answered them quickly and honestly, even ones who could not take the job. What costs referrals is silence and the maybe that never becomes anything.

Decline quickly, decline plainly, and point the person somewhere better if you can. Three sentences, sent within a day, without an invented excuse. A clear no is a kindness; the vague maybe that leaves someone waiting three weeks is the cruelty, and it is the one most photographers choose.

Saying no is a business skill, not a character flaw. Every session you take that does not fit you costs a session that would have. It also produces photographs you do not want in your portfolio, which brings you more of the same work, which is how a photographer ends up with a full calendar and no interest in it.
